The New Amsterdams

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Amsterdams was an American band under the direction of Matthew Pryor, the singer of the emo-rock band The Get Up Kids, and in a way represented the acoustic counter-project. In contrast to The Get Up Kids, there are acoustic guitars as well Accordion , brass, strings and mature elements of American folklore emerge.

The members also included numerous musicians and performers from Get Up Kids and other friendly bands.

history

The New Amsterdams began as a solo project by Matt Pryor. The group was named after Elvis Costello's song New Amsterdam from 1980

Never You Mind (2000)

The debut album Never You Mind was released in 2000, at a time when the Get Up Kids were already enjoying considerable success.

In contrast to the album with The Get Up Kids, mostly acoustic pieces with minimalist instrumental accompaniment are represented here. Besides Matt Pryor, the other instrumentalists Alex Brahl, Ed Rose, Jake Cardwell and Rob Pope could be heard on the album, which is why the solo project ultimately developed into an independent band . Get Up Kids key-doarder James Deweese can also be heard here on a cello .

The first five New Amsterdams albums were released on Vagrant Records .

Para Toda Vida (2002)

In January 2002, Pryor released the second New Amsterdams album Para Toda Vida , which this time was recorded almost exclusively with acoustic guitar and on which dark and subtle songs are included as usual. Further instrumental accompaniment was largely dispensed with. With the exception of a few pieces where the harmonica and banjo were also used.

Worse for the Wear (2003)

A year later, the band went one step further and released an album called Worse for the Wear in which a complete band was used for the first time. This time the cast included the two Pope brothers Rob and Ryan Pope (who still form the bass and drums ensemble of Get Up Kids to this day), as well as their long-time friend and producer Ed Rose. The album was one of the first to be recorded at Black Lodge Studios. A recording studio that Ed Rose and members of The Get Up Kids have renovated and owned by Ed Rose.

Story Like a Scar, Killed or Cured (2005-2007)

The fourth album, Killed or Cured , was released in 2005. However, it was written at a time when the Get Up Kids were already facing initial conflicts, which should ultimately lead to the group breaking up. For this reason, the responsible record company Vagrant Records , a label with which the two bands had been under contract for years, did not want to release the album. Only when the Get Up Kids had finished their farewell tour in the summer of the same year should a sound carrier be released. For this reason part of the album has been made available online for free through The New Amsterdams website. The album itself was not released until April 10, 2007 in its full version as a double album through the retail channels.

In 2006 the band released their fifth album, Story Like a Scar, which was recorded with Matt Pryor and Bill Belzer (drums), Eric McCann ( double bass ) and Dustin Kinsey (guitar).

At the Foot of My Rival (2007)

In September 2007 the band released another album, At the Foot of My Rival, which was released on CD, vinyl and digital download. After the long collaboration with Vagrant Records, the band decided to change this time. The album was to be released by Elmar, an offshoot of Curb Appeal Records, which is partly owned by Get Up Kids bandmate Jim Suptic (the label is named after Pryor's son Elliot Marshall)

In the meantime, Pryor had founded a children's band with The Terrible Twos in the same year , with which he also released the two albums on Vagrant Records.

In January 2008, the Amsterdams released a collection of demos and B-Pages that were only available through their website.

In May of the same year they made their first European tour, which, true to the band name, began in Amsterdam . After that, the band initially planned a little break, as Matt Pryor turned back to the Get Up Kids. Dustin Kinsey joined the band Koufax . In July 2008, Pryor increasingly focused on his solo career. His publication Confidence Man is also to be assigned to the old-country-Gerne, with a sound similar to that of the New Amsterdams.

Outroduction (2013)

Only three years later in November 2011 did Pryor announce in an interview that he had plans for a new New Amsterdam compilation. Pryor was now busy with several solo activities, which moved him to formally dissolve The New Amsterdams in favor of his solo career.

In 2013 a compilation called Outroduction was finally released , which contains B-side material. This time with the Nightshoes Syndicate label, which Pryor founded himself.
