The Officer Down Memorial Page

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Officer Down Memorial Page, Inc. ( ODMP ) is a US not-for-profit website dedicated to the virtual cemetery . It is intended as a memorial and memorial for the US police officers and the US law enforcement officers who perished in the exercise of their duties in the US. This project was launched in 1996 by Chris Cosgriff , who was then a student at James Madison University in Harrisonburg , Virginia . The organization is based in Fairfax, Virginia .

history

Initially, the website was a mere listing of the officers killed in the same year, later it was expanded to include the names of all police officers killed in the 1990s. With the support of the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Fund , the ODMP now has the names of 21,254 killed officers in its database ( as of November 30, 2012 ). The dates back to 1791, in which the first time being allocated killed in the line of duty policeman Constable Darius Quimby of Albany County in the US state of New York was stabbed during an arrest.

Other ODMPs

There are also two additional Officer Down Memorial Pages that deal with police officers who have died while on duty. These are ODMP Canada and ODMP Central Europe.

desideratum

With a large number of such Internet memorials for police killed in the United States, ODMP is the most popular of its kind, with (as of 2010) an average of over 32,000 Internet visitors per day.

Employee

In addition to Chris Cosgriff as head of the project, Steve Weiss , head of the volunteer research team at the ODMP, is also active. Steve Weiss himself is a sergeant with the New York City Police Department on the 81st Precinct . In the course of his research, he uncovered hundreds of "forgotten" cases in which police officers lost their lives while on duty. It resulted in these officials being late, but still able to be registered on the memorial wall, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall in Washington, DC , a wall similar to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial .
