The tap head ( Rhaponticum coniferum , Syn. : Leuzea conifera ( L. ) . DC , Centaurea conifera L.) is a plant from the genus RHAPONTICUM ( Rhaponticum ) in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).
features
The cone head is an evergreen, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches stature heights of 5 to 30, rarely up to 40 centimeters. The spider-weby, tomentose hairy plant is stemless or the stem is less than 40 centimeters long. The upper side of the leaf is greenish, the underside of the leaf white. The lower leaves are lanceolate , undivided or pinnately split , 3 to 15 inches long and 0.7 to 2 inches wide.
The cup-shaped inflorescences are individually terminal on the stems. The egg-shaped inflorescence envelope has a length of 3 to 5 centimeters and a diameter of 2.5 to 4 centimeters. On the bracts there is a membranous, rounded, slit appendage. The pappus rays are pinnate.
The flowering period extends from June to July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18, 22 or 26.
Occurrence
The cone head occurs in the western and central Mediterranean area in rock bushes at altitudes from 0 to 1600 meters. It is mostly found on silicate rock.
Systematics
The tenon head includes the following subspecies:
- Rhaponticum coniferum (L.) Greuter subsp. coniferum : It occurs in Portugal, Spain, Andorra, France, Corsica, Italy, Sardinia, Sicily, the Balearic Islands, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
- Rhaponticum coniferum subsp. berardioides (Batt.) Greuter (Syn .: Leuzea berardioides Batt. , Leuzea font-queri Sauvage , Rhaponticum font-queri (Sauvage) Hidalgo ): It occurs only in Morocco.

The cone head is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens.
