The Poppies was an American vocal group from Jackson , Mississippi that had a hit in 1966 with the song Lullaby of Love .

Band history

Jim Hill High School in Jackson spawned two bands in the 1960s : The Carvettes , the area's dominant male group, and The Poppies, the female counterpart . Members of the Poppies were Dorothy Moore , Rosemary Taylor and Patsy McClune.

During school hours, the trio was so good that it from the Country - producer Billy Sherrill as a background choir of Nashville was brought. Moore later moved to Jackson State University, but continued the musical activities. After the first semester, she dropped out of college to make recordings with the Poppies for Epic Records , which were produced by Sherrill.

The song Lullaby of Love , written by Billy Sherrill and Larry Butler, became a minor hit in March 1966, peaking at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The trio then started a tour of the southern United States. Meanwhile, the second single He’s Ready / He’s Got Real Love was released in June that year , which fell short of the record company's expectations and did not make it into the charts .

Nevertheless, an album named after the Poppies hit Lullaby of Love was released that same year , which went largely unnoticed. The third single Do It with Soul , which is not included , was unable to build on the success of Lullaby of Love at the end of the year, but it was a regional success for the trio. 1967 followed with There's a Pain in My Heart, another, but unsuccessful single.

The tour had meanwhile become a losing business and brought the singers hardly any income, which led to the separation of the Poppies. Patsy McClune then went to California as a background singer . Taylor continued her education and became a French teacher . Moore started a solo career. After two flops and first minor solo successes, she had an international hit in 1976 with the song Misty Blue .
