The Province is a Canadian daily newspaper in tabloid format . It appears Monday through Saturday in Vancouver and is published by Pacific Newspaper Group Inc. , a subsidiary of the Postmedia Network media group . With 520,100 readers, The Province is the most widely read newspaper in British Columbia . In 2001 the circulation averaged 167,746 copies.

The newspaper first appeared in 1888 and was acquired by the Southam family in 1923. In 1945 the printers went on a six-week strike. By then, The Province had been the best-selling newspaper in town, ahead of the Vancouver Sun and News Herald . The Province lost large market share as a result of the strike. In response to ever increasing production costs, Province and Sun merged to form Pacific Press in 1957 .
