Royal British Legion
The Royal British Legion is a British war veterans organization of the United Kingdom's armed forces , which is particularly respected in England and Scotland . She gained notoriety outside of the UK when Tony Blair donated the proceeds of his much-discussed autobiography to the organization.
history
The association was formed on May 15, 1921 to give the veterans a common voice. For this purpose, these organizations joined together:
- Comrades of the Great War
- National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers
- National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers
- The Officers' Association.
The British Legion received the title Royal on May 29, 1971 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary .
Earl Haig , who had been British commander in the Battle of the Somme and the Third Battle of Flanders , was a founding member and directed the Royal British Legion until his death in 1928.
tasks
The association organizes high-profile memorial events and fundraising every year. She has now represented almost 35,000 war invalids in their pension applications and makes around 300,000 house calls each year to provide advice and assistance to veterans and others.
Music groups
The association is supported by more than 50 independent music groups and orchestras spread all over the world. The Central Band of the Royal British Legion , which has existed since 1944 and has had its current name since 1986, has a special status .
Royal British Legion Germany
Due to the long period of deployment of the British armed forces in Germany, there are numerous "branches" at the locations.
