The Samaritans is a Kenyan mini mockumentary - web series of Hussein Kurji . It satirically treats the behavior of the fictitious non-profit development aid organization " Aid for Aid " (German: Help for help ). The two pilot episodes that have existed to date were financed with around 10,000 US dollars , which were raised from 74 donors via Kickstarter.com , and have been viewed as a video stream via the website since October 2013 for a fee of a variable amount .

Concept and idea

According to Kurji, the idea for the series came because he was confronted by acquaintances with many stories and anecdotes about the work of local non-profit organizations over a long period of time .

“The stories I heard from them were so absurd that it was obvious to turn them into a comedy series. [...] I am not an activist , I am not interested in fundamental criticism of development aid, many organizations do a good job. "

- Hussein Kurji

action

The employees of “Aid for Aid” ( AfA ) are looking for a well-sounding name for their new project. They agree on " Food Efficiency and Economic Development " ( FEED ), a hollow word : Just like Aid-for-aid is also available for FEED no concepts or action plans. The aim is to collect funding, the existence of an end in itself .

Characters

In addition to various supporting roles, such as the receptionist with a weakness for Western functionaries, the following characters particularly shape The Samaritans :

Martha

Martha is interim manager of the local AfAs office in Nairobi and positions herself as a pragmatic manager. Her self-image shatters when Scott is awarded the expected promotion.

Scott

As the new director, Scott, with 28 years of experience, has little experience, but a Masters in International Development and extensive knowledge of big buzzwords .

Malik

reception

Six months after it was released, the official trailer has been viewed more than 100,000 times. Both TAZ and Vice compared The Samaritans to Stromberg and the original The Office, respectively .
