The Samples is a music band from Bolder , Colorado, founded in 1987 . The band name comes from the fact that the members made their living in their early years through food samples from the local supermarket. The music is known as " reggae with rock / pop influences" and as a cross between The Police and the Grateful Dead . The founding members were Sean Kelly (guitar / vocals), Charles Hambleton (guitar), Andy Sheldon (bass / vocals), Jeep MacNichol (drums / vocals), and Al Laughlin (keyboards / vocals).

history

Sean Kelly and Charles Hambleton met in Burlington , Vermont , in 1985 while singing "The Sheik," shortly before the formation of Secret City in 1986. After playing together for a year in Burlington, the two followed suit Boulder, Colorado, and met Andy Sheldon, a friend and member of a previous Kelly band. Jeep MacNichol joined the band as a drummer by replying to an ad in the University of Colorado . As they were playing on the premises, Al Laughlin saw the group playing at a frat party and asked the group if they needed a keyboardist : an offer the band accepted.

The band gradually gained notoriety and released their first album named after the band, The Samples, on their own label. After the release, they signed a deal with Arista Records and re-released the same album in May 1989. However, the collaboration with Arista was short-lived as the band was asked to change their sound. The contract with Arista was put on hold and the band continued the tour without a contract. In 1991 Hambleton left the band. He later appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean and co-produced the film The Bay .

The Samples continued the tour and released their own self- release album, Underwater People , which consisted of both studio recordings and live tracks. The band soon visited the newly formed independent company, WAR? - What Are Records? . Her recordings, Underwater People (1991), No Room (1992), The Last Drag (1993) and Autopilot (1994) included, they mixed sensitive pop music with a mixture of folk , reggae, jazz and rock to create their own sound to develop. Sean Kelly, the main songwriter, wrote songs about nature and the environment, giving the band an environmentally friendly reputation.

In 1996 the Samples signed a contract with MCA Records and released their fifth studio album with Outpost . During a sell-off, MCA ran into financial problems and had to make significant remodeling, and as a result, many small or recently signed bands were terminated by the company that year. The Samples contract with MCA was also terminated in this context. Al Laughlin left the band shortly afterwards along with MacNichol, who was aiming for a solo career. The Samples merged under What Are Records? and released three other albums: Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility , The Tan Mule and Here and Somewhere Else . In 2000 the band began releasing their albums independently. In 2003 Andy Sheldon left the band. Since 1997 all band members have changed except for Sean Kelly.

The five founding members reunited for the Mile High Music Festival in 2010. More recently, the band played at the Denver Day of Rock in 2011 and continued to tour.

A documentary film about the band called The Best Band You've Never Heard was in the works. It was produced by Besame films and should be released in April 2012.

The song "Could It Be Another Change" from the band's debut album was used in 2012 for the film Maybe Better Tomorrow .
