The Sandman is a British animated short film by Paul Berry from the year 1991 . He draws motifs from the story The Sandman by ETA Hoffmann .

action

It's eight o'clock in the evening, the mother is doing needlework and her son is walking around the room with a drum. When the dead man strikes the hour on the cuckoo clock, the mother sends her child to bed with a candle. The child anxiously runs the many steps in the dark house to his bedroom, where he hides in bed.

At night the Sandman sneaks up the stairs and the child hears him coming. She hides in bed, trembling, and thinks he's coming into his room, but it's the mother who checks on the child one more time. The child falls asleep. The Sandman, however, was only hiding in the room. He is now dancing around the bed and wants to wake the child, but this seems to be just a nightmare. When it finally opens its eyes, the Sandman throws sand at it, snatches something and disappears through the window.

He goes to his cubs, who are waiting for him like birds in a nest, takes the boy's eyes from his sandbag and feeds them to the cubs. The boy remains horrified and eyeless. He tries to find his way around the room - the final picture shows dozen of the Sandman's victims, who are also eyeless.

Awards

The Sandman won the Grand Prix at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in 1992 and the Craft Prize for best animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival that same year .

The Sandman was nominated in 1993 for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ", but could not prevail against Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase .
