Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase is an American clay-animated short film directed by Joan C. Gratz from 1992.

action

The film opens with an illustration of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa , which appears in Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 transformed by Marcel Duchamp . This is followed by works by Vincent van Gogh , with the images constantly merging into new, significant works of modern painting. Each picture briefly stops in its finished form before it begins to transform into another painting. In some cases, the transitions are fluid, while in other transitions, portraits say words or objects briefly develop a life of their own. The 35 sculpted images include works by Edvard Munch , Pablo Picasso , Andy Warhol and Diego Velasquez .

production

Although the film seems drawn, it was almost two-dimensionally plasticized by Joan C. Gratz and recorded in stop motion . The title of the film takes on the amalgamation of the works of art Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 by Marcel Duchamp anticipates the content of the film.

The few words contained in the film are spoken by Jean G. Poulot .

Awards

Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase won in 1993 the Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ".

At the Melbourne International Film Festival in 1993 Joan C. Gratz received a City of Melbourne Award for Best Short Animation. At the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1992 she was recognized for the best experimental animation.
