Otto Gilbert

Otto Gilbert (born September 25, 1839 in Rätzlingen , † June 23, 1911 in Goslar ) was a German librarian and ancient historian .

Life

Gilbert studied from 1859 to 1866 theology, philosophy and history and received his doctorate in 1867 in Marburg to Dr. phil. In Göttingen he became a member of the Corps Hildeso-Guestphalia in 1864 . He began his professional career as a high school teacher in Hameln . He later joined the library service and became assistant and curator of the Göttingen university library . In 1876 he received his habilitation for ancient history at the University of Göttingen and was appointed associate professor in 1884 . In 1886 he took over the management of the Greifswald University Library as director . In 1899 he retired. On the occasion of his retirement he was given the character of a secret government councilor .
