The Sentinel ( English for The Guardian ) is a 420 m high and rocky hill on the Heard Island of the Heard and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . It rises 1.3 km northeast of Anzac Peak on the Laurens Peninsula .
Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions surveyed and named it in 1948. It is named after its isolated geographical location at the entrance to Atlas Cove .
