The Snearly Ranch Boys were an American country band from Memphis , Tennessee .

Career

The Snearly Ranch Boys were founded in the early 1950s by drummer Clyde Leoppard. Other members were Stan Kesler , Smokey Joe Baugh and Bill Taylor. The Snearly Ranch Boys played pure country music at the time. The group performed in bars and clubs in the evenings or played at local events and on the radio. The Snearly Ranch Boys formed the house band at the Cotton Club in West Memphis , Arkansas .

In 1955 the Snearly Ranch Boys made their first recordings at Sun Records in Memphis. In March of the same year, the single Split Personality / Lonely Sweetheart was released on the Suns sub-label , Flip Records. Smokey Joe and Bill Taylor were singers. In the mid-1950s, the group was expanded to include bassist Jan Ledbetter and, in some cases, drummer Johnny Bernero, who later played on some of Elvis Presley's recordings . The Snearly Ranch Boys are particularly well known today for having had a number of later Sun artists as singers in their band, including Warren Smith , Jumpin 'Gene Simmons , Barbara Pittman , Jimmy Knight and Hayden Thompson . Fiddler Jim Stewart , later founder of Stax Records , was also a member of the Snearly Ranch Boys at times. The permanent members of the band also made some solo recordings, such as Smokey Joe and Johnny Bernero.

Clyde Leoppard's Snearly Ranch Boys - Split Personality

In February 1956, they accompanied Warren Smith while recording rock and roll Ruby at Sun Studios. The following band members were present: Buddy Holobaugh (guitar), Jan Ledbetter (double bass), Smokey Joe Baugh (piano), Stan Kesler (steel guitar) and Johnny Bernero (drums). However, due to disputes with Smith, the group separated from the singer. In April of that year they served as the backing band for Barbara Pittman.

In the late 1950s, the Snearly Ranch Boys split as many members had moved away. Clyde Leoppard ran a fast food restaurant in Memphis in the 1980s .
