St. Leger Stakes
The St. Leger Stakes is a horse race for three year old mares and stallions that has been run in Doncaster , South Yorkshire, England , over 2937 meters every September since 1776 . It is the longest and oldest of the five “British Classic Races”. It is also the final race in the British Triple Crown Series .
The Group I race was initiated by the army officer and politician Antony St. Leger and held for the first time on September 24, 1776 on Cantley Common in Doncaster. The first winner was a nameless mare who was later named Allabaculia . In 1778 the flat race was relocated to Town Moor, where it is still held today.
Jockey Bill Scott got the most victories at the St. Leger Stakes between 1821 and 1846 with nine wins. His brother John Scott celebrated the most successes as a coach with 16 wins. The fastest time (in Doncaster) was Masked Marvel in 2011 with 3m 00.44s.
