The Stripes from Hagen was Gabriele Kerner's first band - known today by its stage name Nena . The Stripes was founded in 1978 by Reiner Kitzmann. At that time Nena was still singing in English and already had a record deal with CBS as part of Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) .

The highlight of The Stripes was Nena’s first TV appearance in Ilja Richter's disco in 1981. The band at that time consisted of Nena (vocals), Reiner Kitzmann (guitar), Jürgen Meier (bass), Frank Becking (guitar) and their boyfriend at the time by Nena, Rolf Brendel (drums).

Shortly after the television appearance, however, after consultation with her record company, Nena decided to orientate herself in the direction of Berlin in order to do justice to parts of the then Nina Hagen band and musicians of the Berlin scene of the Neue Deutsche Welle and to produce in German.
