The Summit - Summit of death is a documentary from the year 2012 by the Irish director Nick Ryan about the tragedy in August 2008 on K2 , the second highest mountain in the world. The docu-drama combines documentary archive material and interviews with dramatically staged reenactments of the events on K2, in which eleven climbers died within two days during the ascent and descent, one of the worst disasters in mountaineering history.

Filming

Most of the shots were recorded by the Swedish mountaineer Fredrik Sträng, who had planned to make a documentary, but rejected this plan because he did not reach the summit. The records he made helped to reconstruct the fatal events, as the mountaineers involved sometimes described different versions of the events. The documentation is supplemented by interviews with the Dutch expedition leader Wilco van Rooijen, the Norwegian expedition leader Cecilie Skog, the Italian expedition leader Marco Confortola, the Nepalese Sherpa Pemba Gyalje and the Italian mountaineer Walter Bonatti .

reception

The Summit received a Metascore of 63 on Metacritic and a combined rating of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes , whose summary review reads: “While it could use more clarity than director Nick Ryan brings to bear, the real-life story behind The Summit still makes for compelling viewing. ”At the 2013 Sundance Film Festival , the film won first prize in the Best Editing - Foreign Documentary category .

Reviews

“This remarkable film puts us in their shoes - literally between the world's most ferocious rock and the icy hard place of imminent death. As such, The Summit dignifies the actions of the surviving climbers by putting their earth-bound detractors in their precipitous plight. "

“This remarkable film puts us in their shoes - literally between the world's cruelest rock and the icy places of impending death. In this way, 'The Summit' honors the deeds of the surviving climbers by putting the earthbound critics into their dire straits. "

- Duane Byrge : The Hollywood Reporter

“In the end, no matter how skilled and prepared the climber, his life is ultimately in the hands of this powerful, sharp peaked presence. Overall Nick Ryan's documentary is exhilarating viewing material that takes you to heights many will never experience (and probably won't want to after seeing this!) ”

“In the end, it doesn't matter how experienced and prepared the mountaineer is, his life is ultimately in the hands of this powerful, sharp presence. Nick Ryan's documentary, on the whole, is exciting to watch material that takes you to heights most will never experience (and probably don't want to after seeing it!) "
