The Temple is a 1924 built synagogue at University Circle at Silver Park in Cleveland ( Ohio ) in neo-Byzantine style .
history
The synagogue was built in 1924 to designs by the American architect Charles R. Greco (1873–1962), who worked in Boston in the first half of the 20th century . The building at University Circle is owned by The Temple - Tifereth Israel Jewish Congregation and is used on major public holidays and everyday events and meetings. The synagogue is also called Silver's Temple or The Silver Sanctuary in honor of Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver (1893–1963). The Jewish community built a branch synagogue , Temple Tifereth-Israel , in the suburb of Beachwood in 1963 , where most of the services are now held.
The synagogue was on August 30, 1974, listed building set and in the monument list of the National Register of Historic Places entered.
Architecture and equipment
The design of the building is based on Byzantine models, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul . Comparable Neo-Byzantine synagogues are the Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco and the Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalem . The building was fitted out with various leaded glass windows by Arthur Szyk showing Gideon , Samson and Judas Maccabeus .
