The Rascals (previously The Young Rascals ) was an American Soul - and pop - band that was popular mainly in the 1960s.

Band history

In 1964 Felix Cavaliere, Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati and Dino Danelli played in the club band "Felix & the Escorts". After Sid Bernstein became their manager that same year , they called themselves "The Young Rascals". Thanks to Bernstein, the Young Rascals got a contract with Atlantic Records and were able to appear in the opening act for the Beatles as early as 1965 .

The debut album The Young Rascals from 1966 reached number 15 in the US charts and recorded 84 weeks in the charts. Only cover versions of songs by other artists could be heard on the album . But the next few successes offered mostly material that Cavaliere and Brigati had written.

Between 1966 and 1968, many Young Rascals songs became big hits, the best known of which are probably Good Lovin ' (1966), Groovin' , A Girl Like You (1967) and People Got to Be Free (1968). In 1968 the band name was shortened to "The Rascals".

Despite experienced studio guests like King Curtis , Chuck Rainey and David Newman , the 1969 double album Freedom Suite received miserable reviews. After the 1971 album Search and Nearness , Brigati and Cornish left the Rascals, who switched to Columbia Records in 1971 . Howard "Buzz" Feiten and Robert Popwell as well as singers Ann Sutton and Molly Holt came as replacements. But things didn't go well with the new line-up, and after two more LP releases the band split up in 1972.

In 1988 the Rascals reunited with Cavaliere, Danelli and Cornish, but only a few concerts resulted from this. Finally, in 1989 legal disputes arose over the rights to the band name: Danelli and Cornish sued Cavaliere, who wanted to call his new band The Young Rascals again. The court ruled that Danelli and Cornish can now call themselves The New Rascals, while Cavaliere had to be content with Formerly of the Young Rascals. The success in court did not bring Danelli and Cornish the slightest, as there was no record release of the New Rascals.

In 1997 the (Young) Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
