Theaster Gates (born August 28, 1973 in Chicago ) is an American conceptual artist . Gates teaches at the University of Chicago .

life and work

In its artistic practice, its sculptures, pottery , installations and performances and urban interventions, Theaster Gates refers to urban structures and historical and political events. He is the singer of the Black Monks of Mississippi . Gates originally worked as a town planner , his father was a construction worker . Construction and change, urban renewal and the reversal of power relationships are his themes. Gates became known with Dorchester Projects .

For dOCUMENTA (13) , Theaster Gates (with the help of participants in job promotion measures from Chicago and Kassel) used materials from both cities to "rebuild" the Huguenot house in Kassel, built in 1826, which had been vacant since the 1970s. A laboratory for objects, performances, discussion events and installations was created. Black Madonna , Gates' first major solo exhibition, took place in 2018 at the Kunstmuseum Basel .
