The Drama School Mainz , Theaterwerkstatt eV, is a state-recognized, private drama school in Mainz .

history

The association was founded in 1985. It has been located on the grounds of the old brickworks , an industrial monument, in Mainz-Bretzenheim since 1988 . Prime Minister Kurt Beck awarded the school state recognition as a vocational school on August 1, 1995 with the handover of a certificate. At the same time, the school received BAföG entitlement.

education

The aim of the training at the drama school in Mainz is to acquire all the skills that are required of actors on German-speaking stages. In addition to the classical repertoire, developments in modern theater are also included in the training. The basis of the training should remain the development of playful imagination, artistic expressiveness and physical and linguistic abilities.

The sponsoring association makes all decisions that are necessary as prerequisites for training. The coordination of the training is in the hands of the school's artistic director. If necessary, your suggestions for optimizing the training are decided by the lecturers' assembly with a simple majority. Many organizational tasks are carried out by the students. In addition to the school fees, the school is financed through annual financial support from project funds from the city of Mainz .

The school has been a cooperation partner of the Mainz State Theater for a number of years . The students of the higher grades have the opportunity to take their first steps under professional conditions. This happens above all in the productions in the field of children's and youth theater.

The course begins in September of each year. The course lasts three years, it is a full-time course that, for example, has around 25 hours per week in the first year. At the end of the first and second year of study, the students are given intermediate exams; at the end of the third year, students are awarded the “stage maturity” after passing their final exam. The school organizes auditions at the Cologne artist agency. The holidays of the Mainz drama school are based on the school holidays in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. The teaching staff consists of actors, directors, speech trainers and lecturers for movement subjects, singing and theory.

admission

Applicants for an apprenticeship place take part in lesson-like events over a weekend. Linguistic, playful and physical suitability for the profession of actor are tested. In addition, all applicants should present two roles of classical and modern theater literature they have developed themselves, each not exceeding five minutes in length. At the end of all events, the results of the admission process will be announced. A fee is charged for the admission procedure.

In the first year of training, the focus is on working with the body and basic training in breathing and voice as group lessons. The first roles and scenes will be shown at the end of this year. In later semesters, individual lessons are increasingly given.

Third-year students present a staging as a thesis. These performances are developed across disciplines and played several times. In scenic collages , the students of all three years show roles they have worked out in class. At breakfast , the students can demonstrate their skills to the audience during a brunch.
