Thekla von Hünerbein

Thekla Freiin von Hünerbein (born April 26, 1840 in Berlin , † March 31, 1902 in Stettin ) was a German deaconess . She was the founder and superior of the Diakonissenhaus Stift Salem in Stettin.

Born as the daughter of a Prussian officer and granddaughter of General Friedrich Heinrich Karl von Hünerbein , she joined the Central-Diakonissen-Haus Bethanien in Berlin in 1866 .

But as early as 1868 she and another deaconess opened a home (“rescue house”) in Stettin for neglected and orphaned girls. Thekla von Hünerbein expanded this facility in the following years: In 1869, in the presence of Crown Prince Friedrich , the foundation stone for a large building of its own was laid. In 1871 it was inaugurated. In 1876 the institution was a deaconess mother house under the name Deaconess House Stift Salem . In 1893 the deaconess house had 40 sisters and 97 pupils.

She led the deaconess house with military severity. In 1902 she died after a long illness.
