Thelma Esperanza Aldana Hernández de López (born September 27, 1955 in Gualán , Guatemala ) is a lawyer from Guatemala. As head of the Supreme Court and attorney general , she campaigned for the rights of women and minorities and for the exposure of corruption in the country.

Life

Thelma Aldana graduated from the Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala with a degree in law in 1982 . Then she worked as a lawyer and notary. In 2007 she completed a postgraduate degree in civil and procedural law at the Universidad de San Carlos and then in business law in Barcelona .

In 2009 Thelma Aldana became a member of the Guatemalan Supreme Court, which she headed from 2011 to 2012. During this time, she created tribunals and courts against violence against women in various regions of the country. In 2014 Thelma Aldana was appointed Attorney General. She initiated programs to protect women, minorities and the indigenous population and campaigned for the coming to terms with acts of violence during the civil war from 1960 to 1996. In the fight against corruption, she soon investigated President Molina and other members of the government. In 2015 he had to resign after nationwide protests and was arrested on her initiative. Thelma Aldana worked closely with the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala and its head Iván Velásquez. After she had also initiated proceedings against a son and a brother of the new President Morales, she lost his support.

As a result, she did not run for re-election in 2018. Thelma Aldana lives in an unknown location abroad after several death threats. She is very popular in Guatemala and wanted to run for the 2019 presidential election as a candidate. On the same day that she was registered as a presidential candidate, an arrest warrant was issued against her for embezzlement and tax evasion. Aldana denied the allegations. In May 2019, her candidacy was rejected by the Constitutional Court. Aldana described the reason that she did not have a valid certificate of good conduct as a pretext to prevent her candidacy.
