Gualán is a small town with around 17,000 inhabitants and a municipality in the Zacapa department in Guatemala . It is located 168 km northeast of Guatemala City and 36 km northeast of Zacapa on the Atlantic trunk road CA 9 at an altitude of 141 m.

The 709 km² municipality extends between the Sierra de las Minas in the north and the Sierra del Espíritu Santo in the south in the valley of the Río Motagua . It has a total of about 55,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Ladinos . In addition to the main town of Gualán, the municipality consists of 56 “rural communities” ( Aldeas ). The main branches of the economy are agriculture , handicrafts and the service sector .

Adjacent municipalities are Río Hondo in the west and Zacapa and La Unión in the south. In the north of the municipality on the main ridge of the Sierra de las Minas runs the border to the department Izabal , which it borders together with Honduras in the east.

The city of Gualán has had a train station since 1896 , but traffic on the railway line between Guatemala City and Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean coast was suspended in 2007.
