La Unión is a place and a municipality in the Zacapa department in Guatemala . The place is located in the southeast of the department in the mountains of the Sierra del Espíritu Santo. On a paved street of La Unión is the further north in the valley of the Motagua River located Gualan connected where the Atlantic highway CA 9 from Guatemala City to Puerto Barrios passes.
The 257 km² municipality has a total of around 25,000 inhabitants. It is located in a relatively secluded, wooded area. The population lives mainly from agriculture, especially from growing coffee and oranges .
Adjacent Municipios are Gualán in the north and Zacapa in the west. In the south it borders on the department of Chiquimula and in the east on Honduras .
