Río Hondo ( Eng. "Deep River") is a place and a municipality in the Zacapa Department in Guatemala .
Río Hondo is located 136 km northeast of Guatemala City on the Atlantic Highway CA 9 at an altitude of 379 m. At Río Hondo, the CA 9 road branches off to the south. About 10 km south is Zacapa , the capital of the department of the same name.
The 696 km² municipality is located in the valley of the Río Motagua and the Sierra de las Minas rising north of it . It has around 20,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Ladinos . In addition to the main town, Río Hondo, the municipality consists of about 30 "rural communities" ( Aldeas ), including Casos de Pinto, Chanchán, El Cenegal, El Petón, El Rosario, El Tecolote, Jesús María, Jones, Jumuzna, La Espinilla, La Palma, La Pepesca, Las Delicias, Las Pozas, Lo de Mejía, Llano Largo, Llano Verde, Mal Paso, Monte Grande, Morán, Ojo de Agua, Panaluya, Pata Galana, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosalía, Sunzapote and Tabacal. The main branches of the economy are agriculture , handicrafts and the service sector .
Adjacent municipalities are Gualán in the east, Zacapa and Estanzuela in the south, and Teculután in the southwest and west. In the north of the municipality, the border with the Alta Verapaz and Izabal departments runs along the main ridge of the Sierra de las Minas .
