Usumatlán (formerly San Juan Uzumatlán ) is a place and a municipality in the Zacapa department in Guatemala . The place is about 150 km northeast of Guatemala City and 37 km west of the city of Zacapa near the Atlantic trunk road CA 9 at an altitude of 230 m.
The municipality is located in the west of Zacapa and extends from the valley of the Río Motagua into the mountains to the north of it. It has a total of just over 10,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Ladinos . The municipality consists of the main town Usumatlán from several "rural communities" ( Aldeas ). The main branches of the economy are agriculture , handicrafts and the service sector .
Adjacent municipalities are Teculután in the north and east, Huité in the east and Cabañas in the south. To the west, Usumatlán borders on San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán in the department of El Progreso .
