Teculután is a place and a municipality in the Zacapa department in Guatemala . Teculután is located 121 km northeast of Guatemala City and 28 km west of Zacapa on the Atlantic highway CA 9 at an altitude of 245 m.
The 273 km² large municipality extends in the northwest of Zacapa from the almost 3,000 m high main ridge of the Sierra de las Minas in the north to the valley of the Río Motagua in the south. In this direction it is also crossed by the Río Teculután and its tributaries. It has a total of almost 20,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Ladinos . In addition to the main town Teculután, the municipality consists of the three "rural communities" ( Aldeas ) San Antonio, Vega Cobán and San José as well as 27 hamlets. The people live mainly from agriculture , handicrafts and services . In the southern lowlands, a number of industrial companies have settled along the Atlantic trunk road.
Neighboring municipalities are Río Hondo in the east, Estanzuela in the southeast, Huité in the south and Usumatlán in the southwest. In the northwest, Teculután borders on the department El Progreso and in the north on Alta Verapaz .
