Theo Francken (2016)

Theo Francken (born February 7, 1978 in Lubbeek ) is a Belgian politician of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA). He has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2010 and was State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration in the Michel federal government . At the local level, he has been Mayor of Lubbeek since the 2012 municipal council elections.

Life

Immediately after studying pedagogical science at the KU Leuven , Theo Francken began his political career as a member of the N-VA parliamentary group in the Flemish Parliament . There he met Geert Bourgeois (N-VA), in whose cabinet he worked as an advisor from 2004 to 2010, when he became a minister in the Flemish government.

In 2010 he made the leap for the N-VA into the Chamber of Deputies for the first time. There he mainly dealt with the political areas of asylum and immigration, defense and monarchy . Four years later, Francken became State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration in the federal government under Prime Minister Charles Michel ( MR ).

Theo Francken came under fire three days after taking the oath as State Secretary after it became known that he was taking part in the birthday of Bob Maes , a former Senator of the Volksunie (VU) and founder of the right-wing extremist association Vlaamse Militante Organizatie (VMO). The opposition then asked Francken to resign from his office. A little later it became known that Francken had published a Facebook message in 2011 in which he asked himself the question of the added value of the Moroccan , Congolese and Algerian diaspora . This also triggered severe criticism.

Theo Francken set up the local N-VA offshoot in his hometown of Lubbeek in 2001, but initially failed to make the leap to the local council. In the local elections in 2012, however, the N-VA was the clear winner and Francken became mayor.

In 2017, Francken came under pressure after deported Sudanese were tortured in their homeland.
