Hervé Jamar (born January 1, 1965 in Huy ) is a Belgian lawyer and politician of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR). He was initially a member of the parliaments of the Walloon Region and the French Community , before becoming State Secretary (later Minister) for the modernization of finances and the fight against tax evasion in the Verhofstadt II federal government from 2003 to 2007 . In 2014 he became budget minister in the Michel government , but left the government a year later and assumed the post of governor of the Liège province . At the local level, Hervé Jamar was mayor of Hannut from 1995 to 2015 .

Life

After Hervé Jamar graduated from the Royal Athenaeum of Hannut, he began studying law at the University of Liège (ULg), which he successfully completed in 1988. He then began his career as a lawyer a year later.

As a student, Hervé Jamar was a member of the Association of Liberal Students ( Fédération des Étudiants Libéraux Unis , FELU), where he made the acquaintance of Jacques Simonet and Willy Borsus (MR). He knew local politics from an early age, as his father André Jamar was mayor of Moxhe, a councilor in Hannut and finally a member of the Liège provincial council. Jamar started active politics in 1989 when Hannut was elected to the municipal council. A few years later he was able to win the mayor's office of the same municipality, which he has held since 1995.

At the regional level, Jamar was initially a substitute candidate in the elections in 1995 and 1999. When Pierre Hazette (MR) became Minister of Education in the French Community, he replaced him in the parliaments of the Walloon Region and the French Community. He left these offices in 2003 when he became State Secretary and, from 2007, Minister for the Modernization of Finances and Combating Tax Evasion in the federal government under Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt ( Open VLD ). After he could not win an executive mandate in the next government, Jamar was again a simple member of the regional parliament.

When, after the federal elections on May 25, 2014, MR became the only French-speaking party to join the government under Prime Minister Charles Michel (MR), Hervé Jamar took over the post of Minister of Budget. Jamar resigned this office about a year later and handed it over to Sophie Wilmès (MR). At the same time it was announced that he would replace Michel Foret (MR) as governor of the province of Liege .
