Theo Jülich

Theo Jülich (born September 14, 1956 in Aachen ; † January 20, 2018 in Darmstadt ) was a German art historian . From 2013 to 2018 he was director of the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt .

Life

Jülich studied art history, architectural history as well as contemporary and modern history at RWTH Aachen University . He received his doctorate there in 1987 on the subject of "Gem crosses - the colors of their precious stones up to the 12th century". In 1987 it went to the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg .

In 1989, Jülich became a research assistant at the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt . In 1996/97 he headed the DFG funding project "Development of the written estate of Baron von Hüpsch (1730–1805)". In 2005 he took on the role of deputy director of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, which he has been in charge of since 2013 as director succeeding Ina Busch .

Jülich wrote some works on medieval arts and crafts, in particular on Romanesque goldsmithing and ivory art.

Theo Jülich died on January 20, 2018 in Darmstadt after a long, serious illness. He had a son with his wife, the art historian Heidrun Ludwig.
