Ina Busch (* 1950 in Stade ) is a German art historian and was director of the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt .

Life

Ina Busch was born in 1950 in Stade as the daughter of the graphic artist Synold Klein . After graduating from high school, she began studying art history, classical archeology and Romance studies at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Hamburg in 1968. After having worked as a tax inspector at OFD Hamburg in the meantime, she resumed her studies in 1973. In 1978 she received her doctorate with a thesis on the Romanian-French sculptor and photographer Constantin Brancusi (1876–1957).

After completing her doctorate, she worked in the art trade for some time. She was also a research assistant at the University of Hamburg and had exhibition-related contracts at the Center Pompidou in Paris. In addition, she worked as a freelancer for various museums. From 1991 to 1996 she was the deputy director of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn, the new building of which was opened on August 19, 1992.

In May 1998 she was appointed director of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt. Here she succeeded Sybille Ebert-Schifferer , who had moved to Dresden. During her tenure, the sculpture collection of Simon Spierer (1926–2005) was donated to the State Museum.

In May 2003 Ina Busch was elected to the board of the German Museum Association. When she took office, she declared that she would be particularly committed to maintaining and delimiting the concept of museum from business enterprises as well as to the preparation and training periods of scientists at museums.

In connection with the plans for the complete renovation of the State Museum in Darmstadt built by Alfred Messel at the beginning of the 20th century, there were violent disputes about the scope and type of renovation, some of which were carried out publicly. The first headlines came after the announcement in 2006 that the museum in Darmstadt was going to be renovated and that the “completely ailing jute wall covering should be removed and the walls painted white”. Then some art experts, such as B. Götz Adriani , Sturm. Adriani worked at the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt and was responsible for the painting department as well as for the Karl Ströher collection ranging from Joseph Beuys to American Pop Art .

The climax of these public disputes was a two-day hearing in April 2008, to which the director had invited. The subject of the hearing was the future of the so-called Block Beuys and the planned renovation of the seven rooms in which Joseph Beuys had installed around 250 drawings and objects, including the famous “Stuhl mit Fett”, in showcases in three weeks in the 1970s. The opinions of the experts about the correct handling of these works of art and the removal of the wall covering were extremely contrary. Busch, who pleaded for the removal of the jute, asked in this emotionally charged situation for sufficient time "for a necessary process". Those responsible were not ready for that.

Ina Busch was seconded to the ministry in summer 2008 by the responsible minister for science and art. From 2010, Ina Busch worked on researching works of art in Hesse within the former Prussian administration in Berlin.

In September 2012, the then Minister for Science and Art of the State of Hesse, Eva Kühne-Hörmann , announced that Ina Busch would not return to the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt after the planned opening in 2013. Instead, she was given early retirement “at her own request and for personal reasons”.
