Simon Spierer
Simon Spierer (* 1926 in Trieste ; † October 4, 2005 in Geneva ) was a Swiss art collector and art patron.
Life
Spierer came from a Jewish family and emigrated in 1943 before the fascists to Switzerland, where he worked as a tobacco and art dealer. Simon Spierer was the owner of a unique collection of sculptures that he had assembled since 1980.
Spierer's art collection Forest of Sculptures, with 39 works, encompasses the early modern period to the present day by renowned international artists of the 20th century. The formal aesthetic concentration of the collection is on the stele and the torso . The best-known works of greatest relevance to art history are Daphné by Julio González (1937), Vogel im Raum by Constantin Brâncuși (1941), Idole by Jean Arp (1950) and Petit buste de Diego sur column by the Swiss Alberto Giacometti (1952). Other works of art are by Max Ernst , Henry Moore , Lucio Fontana , Louise Bourgeois , Barbara Hepworth , Germaine Richier , Max Bill , Isamu Noguchi , Daniel Spoerri and Tony Cragg .
In 2004, Simon Spierer donated the collection, valued at around 15 million euros, to the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt .
