The mask warbler ( Sylvia rueppelli ) is a bird art from the genus of Whitethroats ( Sylvia ).

description

With a length of 12.5 to 13.5 centimeters, the masked warbler is as long as the velvet warbler , but somewhat slimmer. The back is gray, the feathers of the wings are black with the exception of the small covers and have broad, light-colored hems. The alula have only very narrow, light-colored edges, which clearly distinguishes their intense black color from the other color of the wing. The trunk is lighter gray, the tail black with white outer edges on the outermost tail feathers. The legs are dark ocher, the ridge of the beak is slightly curved downwards, the lower beak is pale beige.

The forehead and throat of males in splendid plumage are black and are separated by a white strip of cheeks. The underside is light gray, with a lighter, faded vertical stripe in the middle. The wide, bright red eye ring is very noticeable, the iris is reddish-brown.

In females in splendid dress, the head is lead gray with black speckles on the forehead. The light throat is mottled dark. With a variation of the plumage, the black speckles and spots are missing. The eye ring is narrow, dark red and surrounded by a thin, white orbital ring. The chest and stomach are dirty white, the flanks light gray.

voice

The call is a clucking "whoosh" that particularly the blackcap recalls. Furthermore, a dry rattling "zrrr" and intermediate forms occur. The warning call sounds like a sparrow rattle, is often long-lasting and fast. Sometimes you can also hear a bubbly, nasal and scolding sounding “zett-ett-ett”.

The song is similar to that of the velvet warbler , but more leisurely, melodious and at a lower pitch.

Habitat and Distribution

The masked warbler lives on rocky mountain slopes with sparse, low trees and partly in open oak forest with undergrowth, such as B. high macchia . The nest is usually created in thorny bushes. On this it behaves relatively shy, but the male shows up in singing flights.

The distribution area in Europe is limited to the south of Greece , and the west and south-west, as well as individual populations in north-west Turkey . The mask warbler is a summer bird and winters in Africa south of the Sahara .
