Theocritus (Byzantium)
Theocritus ( Latinized form; Greek Θεόκριτος Theókritos ; † July 518 in Constantinople ) was an Eastern Roman pretender to the throne .
According to Johannes Malalas , the praepositus sacri cubiculi and eunuch Amantius intended to have the domesticus Theocritus elevated to the new emperor after the death of Anastasius I. Thanks to Amantius, Theocritus had enough money to buy the support of other dignitaries at court and the senators. Presumably he also gave a larger sum to the comes excubitorum Justin , which the latter successfully used for his own ambitions for the throne, especially since as commander of the palace guard he had the only powerful troops in Constantinople. Both Theocritus and Amantius were executed nine days after Justin's rule.
