The Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium (short: THG ) is a high school in Waltrop , North Rhine-Westphalia . The school is named after the first Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany , Theodor Heuss .

history

On April 14, 1967, the city council of Waltrop decided to establish a high school for boys and girls. On August 1, 1968, the school began with three fifth grades in the Wichernschule. In November the name “Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium” was decided by the city council, and in April 1969 the groundbreaking ceremony for a new school building took place. The new school building was inaugurated on October 17th.

In 1971 there were 12 classes in 14 classrooms; in a second construction phase, workrooms and language laboratory as well as a 700 m² sports field and a hard court were built . In 1975 the first 22 students at THG were able to take their Abitur , and the topping-out ceremony for the third construction phase with 14 classrooms and an auditorium was celebrated.

In 1978 an association of friends and sponsors of the THG Waltrop eV was founded, which from 1995 onwards awarded a Theodor Heuss Prize to people or groups who have made special contributions to the school. In 1980 the school reached its highest level: 1405 students were attending grammar school at the time. In 1986 a bilingual branch was set up with French as the first foreign language. In 2008 the grammar school submitted an application for funding in the areas of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (MINT) as an alternative to bilingual teaching.

In 2013, 1004 students attended the grammar school. Sonja Leukefeld has been the director of the school since the 2014/15 school year. She has set herself a goal of sustainable improvement in all areas of the learning location in Waltrop. This process is already in development, so that the school was one of the top schools in the Münster administrative district in the quality analysis in 2017.
