Theodor Duimchen (born March 28, 1853 in Delitzsch , † September 5, 1908 in Berlin ) was a German writer .

Life

He was born in Delitzsch am Markt 11, the son of a tobacco trader, while his mother came from a silk boiler family. In 1869 Duimchen graduated from secondary school with "sufficient". In accordance with his father's wishes, he learned the trade in order to be able to continue the family business. Duimchen was able to make several long trips to establish business contacts in the tobacco sector, which apparently also took him to the Caribbean, Cuba and the USA. Larger in the sense, he tried after the death of his father in 1879 to get into the rapidly emerging oil business and to ship petrol from the USA to Europe on a large scale; Duimchen went bankrupt and even had to sell his parents' office building in Delitzsch. As a result, his mother later died in the poor house. For this bankruptcy, Duimchen blamed the ruthless business conduct of the Rockefeller Trust . He processed these experiences in the book " The Trusts and the Future of Cultural Humanity " published in 1903 , in which he warned of the coming world domination of the trusts , which would displace the nation states if the states did not act against them in good time.

After Berlin on siedelnd Duimchen began to engage in literary. He has authored several books and contributed to various magazines. This included B. “ Die Gartenlaube ”, where he brought out the novella “ Blauweiß ” in sequels in issues 23, 24 and 25 of 1895 . In: “ Die Zukunft ” No. 15 - 1896, p. 73 ff., He published the short story “ Mittel undwege ” and also there, No. 16 - 1896, p. 463, “ Die Kunst”: Novelle and sketches .

In his works Duimchen dealt with social problems, portrayed conflicts between the contemporary versus the traditional merchant spirit, or he pointed out the prevailing class differences that burdened love relationships.

Due to economic problems with publishers, such as pirated prints and a failed marriage after the death of a child, i.e. unhappy financial and family circumstances, Theodor Duimchen shot himself on September 5, 1908 in his apartment at Eichhornstrasse 10 in Berlin.
