Erich Sello (born February 29, 1852 in Sanssouci , Potsdam , † December 9, 1912 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer and criminal defense attorney.

Life

Erich Sello was a son of the court gardener Emil Sello . The family had a prominent position at the court and also had private relations with Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (later Emperor Friedrich III) and his wife Victoria .

He attended grammar school in Potsdam and began studying history and philosophy at the University of Jena in 1870 . During the Franco-Prussian War , Sello joined the Guard Jäger Battalion as a one-year volunteer and was later assigned to the Guard Rifle Battalion . During fights near Paris on October 30, 1870, Sello acquired the Iron Cross II. Class, which was presented to him personally by the Prussian Crown Prince. In December 1870 he suffered a severe wound on his left upper arm, which made him unfit for war. The intended military career was therefore no longer an option for Sello. In 1871 he resumed his studies in Jena and switched to the Berlin University on May 8, 1872 , where he studied law and passed the legal clerkship exam in 1873. After completing his doctorate, he completed his legal clerkship and, in 1878, the assessor examination.

Work as a lawyer and politician

In 1879 Sello became a lawyer in Berlin, in 1884 also a notary and was later given the title of Counselor . Sello has worked as a lawyer for numerous prominent personalities. Among other things, he defended the defendants in the Neustettiner synagogue fire trial in 1883/84 and the Berlin city commandant Kuno von Moltke 1907-1909 in the context of the Harden-Eulenburg affair against the newspaper publisher Harden . He later became friends with Maximilian Harden. Karl May asked Harden for assistance in a private lawsuit against Rudolf Lebius ; Harden turned to Sello, who worked successfully for May. In 1910 he defended Antonie von Schoenebeck, who was accused of inciting the murder of her husband in the Allenstein affair .

In addition to his work as a lawyer, Sello sat for the Liberal Association in the Reichstag from 1881 to 1884 . As a member of parliament, he represented the constituency of the Duchy of Anhalt 1 (Dessau - Zerbst).

He was also a lover of old works of art and books. His book collection was one of the most important private libraries in Berlin. He also wrote poems and other works himself. He became known for his work The Errors of Criminal Justice and Their Causes from 1911.

He died on December 9, 1912 in his Berlin apartment at 45 Lietzenburger Strasse.

Erich Sello married Lilli Remberg (1857–1944) in 1879, the daughter of a secret finance councilor and lecturer at the Chamber of Accounts . The marriage had three children. Georg Sello was a brother of Erich Sello.
