Karl Gotthelf Theodor Neumann (born May 7, 1823 in Görlitz , Upper Lusatia ; † August 12, 1856 ibid) was a German local historian and magazine publisher.

Life

Neumann's parents were the Görlitz archdeacon Johann Gotthelf Neumann and his wife Louise Dorothea, born. Schröter. When he had lost his father at the age of eight on June 9, 1831, who had been the secretary of the Lusatian Society of Sciences, the Society's vice-president, Gustav Adolph Köhler (1806-1865), took him into his care as a foster son. After Neumann had attended the Görlitz high school from 1833 to 1843, he studied philology with a focus on history at the University of Breslau from 1843 to 1845 . Since Easter 1845 he continued his studies at the University of Berlin , where Ranke was one of his teachers. On April 20, 1847 he received his doctorate there with the subject De imperatore Carolo IV. Scriptores to the doctorate of philosophy. His first major historical treatise concerned the so-called Upper Lusatian Pönfall .

He had aspired to a public office as a teacher or as an archivist, but was convicted in connection with the political unrest of 1848, sentenced to imprisonment and thereby temporarily lost his civil rights, including the right to employment. In 1851 he was elected secretary of the Lusatian Society of Sciences. With the exception of a brief period during which he tried to gain a foothold in Nuremberg , he held this office until his untimely death. From 1851 he was editor of the magazine Neues Lausitzisches Magazin .
