Theodor Steinkopff

Theodor Steinkopff (born May 26, 1870 in Magdeburg , † March 29, 1955 in Dresden ) was a German publisher and founder of the Theodor Steinkopff publishing house .

Steinkopff was the son of the doctor Hugo Steinkopff and apprenticed as a bookseller. Together with Georg Gringer, he became a partner in the Steinkopff & Springer publishing house in Dresden, which published books and magazines on science and technology. In 1908 he founded his own publishing house, which later published the colloid magazine. Medical literature was added later. After the Second World War he continued to manage the publishing house in Dresden. His son Dietrich Steinkopff (1901–1970) founded a branch in West Germany, first in Wiesbaden, then in Frankfurt and from 1950 in Darmstadt. The west German branch (later managed by Jürgen Steinkopff (1928–1978), son of Dietrich and grandson of Theodor Steinkopff) came to Springer in 1980; the east German branch was expropriated in 1978.

He was a founding member of the Colloid Society , of which he was managing director until 1945 and which awards the Theodor Steinkopff Prize in his honor. He was an honorary member of the Colloid Society and received its Laura R. Leonard Prize in 1940.

In 1929 he received an honorary doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) From TU Dresden.
