The thermal tub snail ( Theodoxus prevostianus ) is a freshwater snail from the family of the barn snail (Neritidae) that lives in thermal springs in south-eastern Central Europe.

features

The right-hand wound, egg-shaped, slightly shiny casing of Theodoxus prevostianus reaches a length of 4 mm to 6 mm and a width of 3 mm to 4 mm, the thread having about two and a half convex, finely striped whorls. The semicircular case mouth has a sharp, cutting edge, the spindle a flat edge. The surface of the case is monochrome black to blue-black on the outside, bluish white on the inside and darker on the side edge of the case mouth. The operculum is dark gray with an orange border.

The snail itself is light in color and has long, pointed antennae, at the widened base of which are the eyes.

Way of life and occurrence

The Thermen-Kahnschnecke lives in thermal springs and the subsequent stream sections at temperatures of 15 ° C to 20 ° C, where they feed on microscopic algae .

Their distribution area includes thermal springs in Lower Austria , Slovenia and Hungary . Due to the threat of destruction of the fragmented habitats, it is classified as an endangered species by IUCN . It became extinct in Romania . Remaining deposits in Austria are the Hansybach and the thermal spring of Bad Vöslau that feeds it , in Hungary a spring near Kács , where it is threatened by construction work.

Reproduction

The Thermen-Kahnschnecke is a separate sex. The female attaches the egg capsules to a solid substrate. After a few weeks, one finished young hatch per egg capsule.
