Theophil Tschudy

Theophil Tschudy (born March 6, 1847 in Mumpf ; † November 15, 1911 in Zurich ) was a Swiss architect .

biography

Alfred Theophil Tschudy was a son of the Mumpfer mayor and mill owner Jakob Tschudy-Waldmeier. After graduating from the Aarau Cantonal School, he began studying architecture at the ETH Zurich in 1867 with Gottfried Semper .

After completing his studies, he worked from 1869 with Johann Friedrich Würth in Davos and from 1872 with Rudolf Ludwig Ray in Budapest . The latter was known for monumental, splendid buildings of special dimensions. Back in Zurich , he worked from 1875 in the architectural firm of Heinrich Ernst , the following year he started his own business.

From 1878 to 1908 he ran a joint architecture office with Alfred Chiodera . In 1879 Theophil Tschudy married Lina Brunner, daughter in the hotel “ Baur en Ville ”, which he was then responsible for renovating . Tschudy worked on various hotel, villa, church and synagogue projects at home and abroad. In the last three years of his life he ran his own office again.

Many of the buildings in which he was involved are listed , such as the Villa Patumbah in Zurich and the two synagogues in St. Gallen and Zurich.
