The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1988/89 season was the 24th staging of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in October 1988; the final was played in February 1989. A total of 18 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended the title for the eleventh time in a row.

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1987/88 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played for the first time with a preliminary round in four groups of four in a simple mode. The final was played in a group of four of the group winners of the preliminary round in the mode of everyone against everyone.

qualification

The qualifying games were played on October 2 and 9, 1988 in the cities of Sofia , Jesenice , Edinburgh and Budapest . Four teams played the two qualifiers for the free place in the preliminary round groups A and D in the first and second leg.

The HK Jesenice won against PFC Slavia Sofia through and qualified for the group D. Újpesti Dózsa Budapest beat the Murrayfield Racers and thus obtained the right to start in Group A.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round of the European Cup was played in four groups between November 16 and 20, 1988. The venues were Esbjerg in Denmark , Nijmegen in the Netherlands , Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in Austria and Porza in Switzerland . The winners of the qualification, Újpesti Dózsa Budapest from Hungary and HK Jesenice from SFR Yugoslavia , qualified to participate in groups A and D.

Group A

The matches in Group A were in Danish Esbjerg discharged. The games took place in Skøjtehal , which has a capacity of 4,195 .
