Oldest grand hotel in town |
The Savoy Baur en Ville Hotel is the oldest Grand Hotel of the city of Zurich . It was founded in 1838 and is located on Poststrasse on Paradeplatz . It has been owned by Credit Suisse for several decades . The hotel has two restaurants and a bar.
history
Johannes Baur , originally a journeyman baker from Vorarlberg , Austria , immigrated to Zurich in the 1820s. First he ran the Zum Kirschbaum inn in Marktgasse , across from the confectioner David Sprüngli .
In 1837 Johannes Baur bought the building in Zurich that had previously served as a parsonage and opened the Café Baur right next to what was then the city's most important post office . Together with his wife Anna Knechtli, Baur converted the house into a hotel by 1838 according to plans by the architect Daniel Pfister and opened the Baur en Ville on December 24, 1838 as the city's “first real hotel”. At that time it comprised 140 beds and stables for 36–40 horses.
The chronicle of 1845 contains the names of various well-known personalities of the time who stayed at the Hotel Baur en Ville, such as Friedrich Wilhelm von Bismarck and Anselm von Rothschild , Otto Wesendonck , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Franz Liszt .
From 1877 to 1878 the house and the Orsini restaurant were rebuilt. After Baur's death, Heinrich Brunner took over the hotel and in 1899 sold it to property speculator Jakob Lassmann from Constantinople . In 1899 a renovation and extension project by the architects Chiodera and Tschudy in the style of the French Renaissance was approved, but not carried out. Lassmann's speculations led to financial ruin and the hotel went to Jakob Schwarz.
In 1907, under Hotel Director Schwarz, the renovation and extension work was commissioned by the architects Pflegehard & Haefeli and on June 13, 1908, 170 rooms were opened. Since then, the hotel has had the addition of the Savoy to its name .
The hotel has been the home of the United Guilds of Gerwe and Schumacher since 1923, and on November 28, 1924, the United Guilds celebrated their first arithmetic meal in the hotel. The Savoy Club, founded by Zurich returnees in 1890, has been meeting in the hotel since 1923 . From 1975 to 1978 this was closed due to urgent renovation work and was reopened on March 31, 1978.
In the 1990s, the architects Fässler & Partner carried out various renovation work while the business was still running, such as the renovation of the facade and the roof in 1997, the renovation of 90 guest bathrooms and the redesign of the Orsini restaurant in 1998, the redesign of the festival and guild hall in 1999 and the redesign of 30 guest rooms and replacement of the canopy at the main entrance in 2000.
Christina and Manfred Hörger have been running the hotel since 1985. In 2015 Manfred Hörger passed away and in 2017 Christina Hörger handed over the management to Werner Knechtli. In 2018 the terrace was reopened as an extension of the Savoy Bar. Today the hotel has 104 rooms and suites and 170 employees.
The Baur en Ville should not be confused with the Baur au Lac on Lake Zurich , which was also built by Baur in 1844.
Architecture and construction
From 1836 to 1838 the master builder and architect Daniel Pfister built a regular, block-like structure, structured by Ionic columns and pilasters with Ionic capitals . As part of the renovation in 1907, the hotel was extended by two floors, the architectural style of the original building was retained. Instead of the former continuous loggia , all rooms behind the main facade were provided with verandas and the pillars on the ground floor were narrowed. The new floors were combined by pillars with plant capitals across each floor. The top floor stands out due to a meandering stone railing and pharaoh figures that support the entablature.
In the 1970s, the building had to be completely demolished in accordance with fire protection guidelines, but also for reasons of comfort; conversion was not possible. At the same time, however, the street scene should be preserved, which consists of the Tiefenhof houses , the credit institution and the Hotel Savoy Baur en Ville on Paradeplatz . A building according to a new, modern design was therefore ruled out. The contract for the construction went to Karl Steiner AG , which removed the facade piece by piece, built a new building, and then rebuilt the historic facade. Inside, the hotel is built in the style of the 1970s, while from the outside it still shows the historical facade.
