Daniel Pfister (born January 27 or 28, 1808 in Männedorf ; † October 30, 1847 in Riesbach ) was a Swiss master builder-architect who caused a sensation through his contributions to the then new building project of hotel architecture.

Life

After training as a stone mason and master builder and study trips to France, Germany and Russia, Pfister settled in Riesbach, from where he unsuccessfully applied for the office of state building inspector in 1835 . From 1836 he was involved in the journal for the entire construction industry published by Carl Ferdinand von Ehrenberg , the first relevant specialist journal in Switzerland. In 1837 he was a founding member of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects .

As far as is known, Pfister's works have all been more or less rebuilt or completely destroyed. The Hotel Savoy, built in the classical style based on the English model of Palladianism 1836–38, the later Baur en Ville - to distinguish it from the Baur au Lac , built in 1842 - was the first pure hotel building in Zurich. The house, which originally had around 90 rooms, was expanded and rebuilt in 1908 by Pflegehard and Haefeli and demolished and reconstructed in 1975-77.

The classicist Villa Mexico in Mühlebachstrasse from 1835 also dates from the first construction period of Zurich's magnificent villas in Riesbach. It was supplemented by a number of extensions by Otto Pflegehard in 1929 and added to the inventory of listed buildings in the city of Zurich in 2010.

The Gasthaus Zur golden Krone on Limmatquai , built in 1837 , for whose authorship Hans Conrad Stadler is also in question, was rebuilt by Franz Huwyler in 1907-09 in the spirit of Art Nouveau, the branch to the new Krone on Rämistrasse from 1841-42 was divided in 1862; the predecessor of today's Kronenhalle came to the left .
