The Therapy Center Ybbs an der Donau is a hospital run by the Vienna Hospital Association in Ybbs an der Donau ( Lower Austria ). It consists of a psychiatric hospital with 145 beds and a socio-therapeutic center with 205 beds.

history

After the separation of Vienna and Lower Austria in 1921 , the insane asylum of the state of Lower Austria fell to the City of Vienna through the Separation Act , which united the two houses, which are only separated by a street, to form the "Viennese municipal sanatorium and nursing home in Ybbs an der Donau" .

time of the nationalsocialism

After the nursing homes were placed in institutions in Vienna, they were only used for mentally ill patients until 1941. During the Nazi regime in Austria , 2,282 people from Ybbs were brought to the Nazi killing center in Hartheim and killed there during the National Socialist murders of the sick, Aktion T4 .

A hospital was housed here between 1941 and 1945 .

post war period

Between May 1945 and March 1947 the buildings were used as quarters by the Red Army . After a renovation, the institution could be used civilly again from 1948. The renaming to the name Therapy Center Ybbs an der Donau - Psychiatric Hospital took place in 1996.

building

The departments are distributed as follows:

  • House 1 (western part of the building): Psychiatric hospital and social therapeutic center (Persenbeugerstraße 1–3)
  • House 2 (eastern part of the building): Social therapeutic center (Persenbeugerstraße 1–3)
  • In the city of Ybbs there are still 2 residential groups in their own buildings

House 1 (Social Therapy Center and Psychiatric Hospital)

House 1 was built between 1720 and 1723 as a cavalry barracks and from 1780 it was used as a state supply house ( poor house ). From 1817 an increasing number of mentally ill people were housed here. From 1859 the institution was administered by the state insane fund and from 1865 by the Lower Austrian insane fund.

House 2 (Social Therapy Center)

The building, now known as House 2, was built in the 13th century as a Cistercian convent . Between 1631 and 1783 the monastery was owned by the Franciscan nuns , who demolished the old monastery and had it replaced by a new building. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played the organ of the monastery church in 1762 .

The municipality of Vienna bought the property in 1859 and, after the old buildings were demolished, had a pension institution built here between 1859 and 1864 according to plans by Theophil von Hansen and Ludwig Förster , which existed until 1922.

School of Mental Health and Nursing

The school for psychiatric health and nursing care, founded in 1963, has been located in the Princely Castle of Ybbs on the Danube since 1995. This was renovated by the city of Ybbs for 35 million shillings. The City of Vienna rented the listed building and paid for the facility in the amount of around 2.5 million schillings. There has been no training program at the Ybbs Therapy Center since 2019.
