There Was a Time (Echo of Harlem) is a jazz album by the Eddie Harris Quartet that was recorded on May 9, 1990 and released by Enja .
background
Eddie Harris, who was better known for his experiments with the electrified saxophone and humorous interludes, only played mainstream acoustic jazz on this album. Supported by veterans like pianist Kenny Barron , bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Ben Riley , the album contains a mixture of original compositions and jazz standards. The album was produced by Todd Barkan for the German Enja label and received mostly positive reviews.
reception
Scott Yanow awarded four out of five possible stars and wrote about the album on allmusic:
"Although Harris has maintained a fairly low profile during the past decade, he is still playing in his prime as this highly recommended CD demonstrates."
"Even though Harris has been quite submerged over the past decade, he still plays first-class, as this highly recommended CD demonstrates."
Richard Cook and Brian Morton , who rated the album three (out of four) stars in their Penguin Guide to Jazz , call There Was a Time (Echo of Harlem) “a concentrated tenor-and- rhythm [group] meeting, and the Results are good enough that one wonders why he is wasting his time on other music. ”The authors particularly highlight his“ courageous ”solo performance in The Song Is You ; Overall, however, his “rubbery tone and inadequate expressiveness are not to everyone's taste”, even if his energy cannot be denied.
