Theseus modestus is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae). In English, the type of bug is also known as the Gum Tree Shield Bug ("rubber tree shield bug ").

features

The approximately 15 millimeter long bugs are mottled black and gray. The relatively long head has five light longitudinal lines. The scutellum has a brightly colored lower end.

The nymphs have a round shape and are colored black with a white pattern.

distribution

The species is widespread on the Australian continent. It is native to Queensland, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Way of life

The bugs feed almost exclusively on phytophagus . They can be found on various eucalyptus trees such as the red eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus camaldulensis ) or Eucalyptus simmondsii . Both the adult bugs and the nymphs usually stay on the tree trunk, where they pierce the bark to suckle the sap. The adult bugs can also be found on the stems and leaves of the eucalyptus trees. The bugs also eat the eggs of various plant lice.
