Thingiverse.com (usually just called Thingiverse ) is a website whose task is to collect and share user-produced digital design data.

Content

Mostly, files are published as open source ( CC and GPL ) licensed files. The users select the license type of their choice and assign it to the data that they want to share with other users (comparable to the licensing system at Vimeo or Flickr ). 3D printers , laser cutters , CNC - milling and other machines can be used to the questions submitted for Thingiverse.com available files implement physically. The platform is widespread in the international hobbyist and do-it-yourself scene. It achieved particular success and notoriety through the web communities that gather around the RepRap and MakerBot 3D printer projects .

Much of the data provided on Thingiverse is for repair purposes. Others are stand-alone devices and machines that users can use with the above. Be able to manufacture machines yourself based on the files.

history

Thingiverse was founded by Zach Smith in November 2008. It was intended as a sister project to Makerbot Industries , a 3D printer manufacturer that was still young at the time . The project was praised at Ars Electronica 2010.

administration

The website is hosted by Makerbot Industries and operated in Brooklyn , New York by its founders Zach "Hoeken" Smith and Bre Pettis.

Open source hardware

The project belongs to the open source hardware movement. Usually, specific projects are worked on within the free hardware scene. Blueprints and designs mostly specialize in specific materials and tools. Thingiverse, on the other hand, offers a common platform for various technical implementations and variations of the plans and models published there. For example, various variations, further developments and derivatives of the RepRap 3D printer can be found on Thingiverse.
