Tholakele Madala
Tholakele Hope "Tholie" Madala (born July 13, 1937 in Kokstad ; † August 25, 2010 ) was a South African lawyer and judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa .
Education and professional career
Born in Kokstad, Madala attended St. John's College in Umtata , which he graduated in 1956. This was followed by studies at Fort Hare University . There he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree and a diploma in teaching at universities in South Africa. He then taught at the Lovedale Institute in Alice and Swaziland , before he began studying law at the University of Natal in 1972 and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws . There he was involved in setting up student legal advice for the needy. From 1980 Madala taught at Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha until he was admitted to the bar in 1982. In his law firm, he has handled many cases involving violations of human rights . Because of this specialization, he founded the Prisoners' Welfare Programs in 1985 , a non-profit organization that aimed to provide financial and legal aid to political prisoners. Madala was president of this organization until 2008. Between 1987 and 1990, and from 1991 to 1993 he was also Chairman of the Association of Solicitor of Transkei . In 1994 he was the first non-white person to be appointed to a judge's post in the Eastern Cape Province . In September of the same year Nelson Mandela appointed him judge at the newly established Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa. He held this position until his retirement in 2008. In addition to his professional activity, he remained connected to the training of young people. For example, he was a member of the board of directors of Walter Sisulu University, where he was particularly committed to the law faculty.
Others
Madala was married to Patricia Alice Ndileka Madala, also a lawyer. He had three children with her and was a grandfather of two. He was also involved in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa .
