The Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Tower is a memorial in honor of Thomas Alva Edison in the former Menlo Park urban development area , now Edison State Park , a state park in Edison in the US state of New Jersey , USA . Edison had his first laboratory from 1876 to 1884 in what is now the state-administered area and did important work on the invention of the incandescent lamp . The monument consists of an approx. 52 m high concrete tower, at the top of which there is an oversized stylized light bulb with a diameter of approx. 6 m. The tower opened on February 11, 1938, the inventor's 91st birthday.
The tower, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979 , was designed by the architects Massena & duPont , the stylized light bulb from a glass and steel structure at the top was created by Corning Glass Works from a sketch of the first commercial light bulb. The monument was designed by William Slocum Barstow, the then president of the Thomas Alva Edison Foundation Inc. donated. Since 1999 the memorial has been administered by the Edison Memorial Tower Corporation .
